THE MICHIGAN LIGHTHOUSE ALLIANCE THE MICHIGAN LIGHTHOUSE ALLIANCE

In order to assist the Project and current and potential lighthouse stewards in Michigan, the Project relies upon a team of national, statewide, and regional nonprofit organizations. These nonprofit groups are directly concerned with the future of Michigan’s historic lighthouses and possess expertise in a variety of areas that directly affect these treasured structures. Whether by helping the Project directly or by helping lighthouse stewards throughout the state, these nonprofit organizations not only assist the Project during the transfer process, but they continue to assist lighthouse stewards throughout the entire endeavor of preserving and maintaining the structures long after the transfer. These nonprofit organizations can help lighthouse stewards and the communities in which they are located in a variety of ways: Organizational Development, Technical Assistance, Community Development, Economic Development, Preservation and Conservation, Cultural and Maritime Heritage, Tourism, Funding.

The purpose of the Alliance, which includes over fifty nonprofit organizations, over thirty of which are lighthouse preservation organizations, is to:

  • Build a network of lighthouse stewards and stakeholders

  • Provide long-term sustainability for lighthouse preservation efforts in Michigan

  • Develop and assist new stewards for Michigan lighthouses

  • Provide technical assistance and general information to all lighthouse stewards

  • Establish educational and outreach programs that foster public awareness of the plight of Michigan's historic lighthouses and the purpose of the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act

  • Emphasize the critical role of lighthouse preservation to the economic vitality of local communities and to the State of Michigan

  • Advocate for Michigan's historic lighthouses by supporting necessary legislation, regulatory policies, and other public policies that support preservation efforts
