Lighthouse
ownership and preservation will require the use of a variety
of professional
services. For example, one of
the first steps in owning and preserving a historic lighthouse
is to complete a Historic Structures Report (HSR). The HSR is
prepared
when proposed work on historic structures or proposed uses of a
historic site might affect the qualities and characteristics
that make the
property eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic
Places. HSRs are intended to be cost efficient, well defined, and
professionally solid "action" documents, spanning the
gap between planning and implementation. Once you are ready to
embark
on the actual restoration or rehabilitation of your lighthouse,
locating and working with the right contractor(s) is a critical
step in the
preservation process. Insurance on lighthouse properties and to
protect lighthouse stewards is also a necessity. In all of theses
instances,
the use of private sector professional services will be required
for the preservation and maintenance of historic lighthouses. The
firms listed below have experience working with historic lighthouses
and as sponsors have helped make this website possible. This
list does not constitute an endorsement. When seeking a consultant,
the Michigan Lighthouse Project recommends interviewing more
than one firm and calling a consultant’s past clients for
references. For the names of clients of the firms on the list
below, please contact the Michigan Lighthouse Project Manager
at info@michiganlighthouse.org.
