DeTour Reef
For generations, the light at DeTour Passage has
provided a beacon for those vessels seeking the "Gateway to Superior." Built in 1931 and located
a mile offshore in northern Lake Huron at the far eastern end of Michigan’s
Upper Peninsula between DeTour Village and Drummond Island, the historic 83-foot
lighthouse marks a dangerous reef to help guide ship traffic on the St. Mary’s
River. The DeTour Reef Lighthouse Preservation Society completed major restoration
of the structure in 2004 with many original-period furnishings and equipment,
and public tours began in July 2005. DeTour Reef Light was added to the National
Register of Historic Places in March 2005 and in May 2005 received the Michigan
Governor’s Award for Historic Preservation. The society’s long-term
plan is to develop an onshore viewing and educational center, and obtain ownership
of the lighthouse.
