Michigan has a rich maritime heritage. Surrounding our state's two peninsulas, the Great Lakes have influenced settlement, commerce, transportation, industry and recreation. They define our past and influence our future. The varied natural and historic resources along Michigan's 3,200 miles of shoreline include the state's most identifiable icons: lighthouses.

Michigan has over 120 lighthouses—more than any other state. Many are on the mainland; some stand lonely vigil off shore; others dot our islands. Having helped mariners navigate dangerous shoals and find safe harbors for decades, lighthouses themselves are now in danger.

Lighthouses around the Great Lakes are viewed as national resources for their historic, cultural and scenic values. The lands surrounding the lighthouses also merit special attention because they provide important habitats for the hundreds of animal, bird and plant species that rely on the Great Lakes ecosystem.
