Legislation now headed to the President to be signed into law
Washington, DC – U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) and U.S. Rep. Dave Camp (R-Midland) today announced that the U.S. House of Representatives has passed their legislation to preserve and promote Michigan’s lighthouses and maritime heritage. The Michigan Lighthouse and Maritime Heritage Act (S. 1346, H.R. 3532) will create a federal, state and local partnership to restore lighthouses in Michigan and promote the maritime culture of the Great Lakes. The bill was passed by the Senate earlier this year, and will now go to the President to be signed into law. Story continued at http://camp.house.gov/press/PressRelease.aspx?NewsID=1817.

" This is the definitive book about the fight over Great Lakes water. The book does for the Great Lakes what Ansel Adams’s photos did for Yosemite it shows the world what a precious and irreplaceable resource the Great Lakes are, and why it is so important that they be protected." -- Noah Hall, Professor, School of Law, Wayne State University

Preservation group recognizes National Lighthouse Day in honor of Michigan’s historic lights: Majestic beacons are vital part of state’s tourism economy

August 7 is National Lighthouse Day, and with 120 lighthouses throughout the state, Michigan has good reason to celebrate.

The Michigan Lighthouse Fund, a 501(c)3 organization dedicated to raising funds for lighthouse preservation grants, wants to recognize Michigan’s treasured lights as part of National Lighthouse Day, which was signed into law by President Ronald Reagan in 1988. Having helped mariners navigate dangerous shoals and find safe harbors for decades, not to mention their current appeal to tourists and locals alike, Michigan’s lighthouses are among the state's most identifiable icons.
